HEAD COACH 

BEV PLOCKI

Bev Plocki has completed her 35th season as head coach of the University of Michigan women's gymnastics program. During her tenure, Plocki has transformed the program into a consistent national powerhouse, winning the programs first-ever national title in 2021. She has led the Wolverines to 26 Big Ten championships, the most by any coach, in any sport, in Big Ten history. She also has guided the squad to eight Big Ten regular season titles, 26 NCAA Championship appearances and 10 NCAA Super Six berths.

One of the nation's top gymnastics coaches, Plocki is an 11-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, 13-time NCAA Regional Coach of the Year and a two-time National Coach of the Year, earning the honor in 2021 and 1994. She has led Michigan to 13 NCAA Regional titles and has guided the Wolverines to 25 top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships. Under her tutelage, Michigan captured a Big Ten-record seven conference titles in a row from 1999-2005, while 53 of her student-athletes have secured 210 NCAA All-America honors and nine NCAA individual national titles.

 

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH 

SCOTT SHERMAN

Scott Sherman completed his 28th season with the women's gymnastics program. He was promoted to Associate Head Coach on Sept. 17, 2019 after 23 years as an assistant coach. His primary responsibilities include coaching on uneven bars, coordinating schedules, and assisting in recruiting efforts. During his tenure, Sherman has helped Michigan to the programs first-ever national title in 2021 as well as 21 Big Ten Championships titles, eight Big Ten regular season titles, 13 NCAA Regional titles, 21 NCAA Championships appearances and seven NCAA Super Six berths.

Sherman is widely considered to be one of the nation's finest coaches on uneven bars. He was named NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2008 and is an nine-time NCAA Regional Coach of the Year (1997, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023).

In 2023, Sherman helped lead Michigan to its 27th Big Ten title as it tied its uneven bars record of 49.725 at the championship event. Sherman's uneven bars sqaud ranked within the top five for the entirety of the 2023 campaign, while her helped the vault team to a top-three ranking on three occasions.

ASSISTANT COACH 

MAILE'ANA KANEWA-HERMELYN

Maile'ana Kanewa-Hermelyn finished her sixth season as an assistant coach for the Michigan women's gymnastics team. She was hired on July 1, 2019 after spending the 2018-19 season as a volunteer assistant and then interim assistant coach. Kanewa-Hermelyn also serves as recruiting coordinator and choreographs the team's floor routines.

During her tenure, Michigan earned its first-ever national title in the 2021 season and has won two Big Ten Championships and three Big Ten regular season titles. Kanewa-Hermelyn was named a WCGA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2021, the first of her career, along with associate head coach Scott Sherman and volunteer coach Lexi Funk following the Wolverines NCAA title. In her fourth season as an assistant coach at Michigan Kanewa-Hermelyn, along with Sherman, earned her third Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honor with her first coming in the 2020 season.

Kanewa-Hermelyn helped coach the Wolverines to their 27th Big Ten Title in the 2023 campaign and earn six scores of 198+. On the beam, Kanewa-Hermelyn led the Wolverines to a program record 49.625 against both Nebraska and Minnesota and was an integral part of Michigan's six weeks ranking No. 1 nationally on floor after choreographing Michigan's routines. 

ASSISTANT COACH

CALI HAGER

University of Michigan’s women’s gymnastics coach Bev Plocki announced the completion of her 2023-24 staff, hiring Cali Hager as an assistant coach.

 

Hager comes to Michigan after spending the last year as a graduate student coach at Eastern Michigan as well as a Student-Athlete Support Services graduate assistant. She also spent five years as a gymnast at EMU as she helped lead the team to a Mid-American Conference Championship in 2021.

 

As a graduate student coach at Eastern, Hager helped coach all four events as well as assisting to create individualized practice assignments on each event. She also assisted in creating the team’s conditioning regiment, working with athletes on the road with academic responsibilities and organizing and facilitating team community service projects.
